Hi Parents!
As expected it has been a whirlwind since Spring Break. First I want to thank everyone who came for Great Lives to support the students. They all did an amazing job.
Arizona State Assessments have already begun. Our next tests will begin on April 8th and end on April 10th. The test are all day so please plan on your child being here the entire day during that time. For testing we want to provide a small breakfast snack and then snacks between tests. I will post the Sign Up for snacks/breakfast for testing days on the Sign Ups page. I would like to thank the families that always sign up to bring food or help out and want to encourage everyone to participate in some way to spread out the load.
Please be sure to read the email from Admin regarding the eclipse on April 8th. Due to testing our students will most likely not be pulled from class, even if they brought a permission slip and glasses. During the hours of the eclipse the blinds will be drawn, from 10 am to 1 pm as instructed by admin, to keep students from looking directly into the sun. If you have any additional questions about the eclipse please direct them to Christy Cantu.
The next set of important dates are the end of the year trip. We will be leaving early the morning of May 8th and returning around dinner time on May 10th. More detailed information will be sent out in the next several weeks with specifics for departure, packing and expectations. There will most likely be a parent orientation for chaperones during the week of April 15th. We will contact chaperones with more information soon.
Optional end-of-the-year conferences will be available the week of April 29th. If I do not contact you I do not need to meet with you. However if you have a concern you may use the conference link to sign up.

Our field trip is on Friday this week. Please sign the permission slip that will be in your child's folder on Wednesday night. They must have a physical permission slip to attend the trip. I will attach a copy in the documents tab. They will also need a sack lunch and a water as we will not be here for pizza.
It looks like we will need one more driver due to the number of seats available. Please see the sign up Genius where I have added an additional driver spot.
Thank you,
Tammy

GOING OUT
We have the opportunity this month to go to TGen to study DNA to go along with our cell studies and human body systems. This is a whole class going out on Friday, February 23rd from 9:00 to 12:30, so we need enough parent drivers to transport the children there and back. I will be posting a Sign-Up Genius for you to sign-up. ALL PARENT DRIVERS HAVE TO HAVE A FINGERPRINT CLEARANCE CARD AND ALL OF THEIR VOLUNTEER PAPERWORK TURNED INTO THE OFFICE.
A BIG thanks to Nick Banovich, Emery's dad, for making this possible.
WRITING AND AI PRESENTATION
On Tuesday, February 13th, Kristy Carver, Lucas' mom, will be coming to talk to the class about writing and the use of Artificial Intelligence apps. She is a Journalism Professor at ASU and will be sharing with the class responsible ways to use AI in their writing. I know she probably has a lot more to share so we will update you after our visit with her.
FUN RUN
The Fun Run was a huge success!
The class in the last two days earned a 30 minute game of GaGa Ball with just our class. They also earned a day to have frozen treats.
Thanks to everyone who participated and supported their child to help out the school and the classroom. The funds from the Fun Run come directly to our classroom to purchase anything we may need.
Great Lives Projects and Presentations
Thank you to everyone supporting their children at home to complete their Great Lives assignments on time. Checking in 29 papers is a challenging task that takes a great deal of class time. However when students have their things here on check in day it helps us to use our time efficiently.
The Great Lives Fair is on March 5th, and parents are invited to join us from 10 am to 11 am. We hope to see you all there. If you are bringing siblings from younger grades you will need to pre-plan that with their teacher a couple days ahead to make sure they are available to attend. All siblings must be with an adult and not running around the event. All E2 siblings will be attending their siblings presentation at a designated time so please do not remove them from class.

Fun Run:
The Fun Run kick-off is today. If we have a high percentage of students just register their name tonight they will win a "game day". Even if your child is unable to attend we encourage them to register and then also ask friends and family for a flat donation to help support our classroom. The money raised from the Fun Run goes directly back into the classrooms so any participation helps. Last year our classroom was awarded around $1500 to purchase materials and supplies.
GREAT LIVES PROJECTS:
I have seen most everyone's notecards but if you received an email from me last week saying I have not seen the work then please check in with your child. They have all been given a yellow Due Date sheet in a page protector that I sign when they turn in the assignment. January 26th is the next due date for their research paper Outline and Project Proposal. The Project Proposal form is in the page protector with their yellow sheet.
THE OUTLINE
For completing the outline I have been showing some students how to use CHATGPT to create a format. The premise is that they have done all of the research and using AI to support the next step would be just that, support. In the examples I have done with some students they are able to see that they have al ready found the information that is on the outline generated. If they are missing something they can go back and do additional research on their Great Life. I WILL BE ASKING PARENTS TO SET UP THE ACCOUNT IN YOUR OWN NAME UNLESS YOU ARE COMFORTABLE CREATING ONE FOR YOUR CHILD. The search question format I have been using is "Create an outline for a research paper on __(Great Life Name)____ at the 6th grade level." Higher level readers and writers may want to put in a higher grade level such as 8th or 9th grade, especially if their Great Life has had a very busy life.
Moon Journals
On January 11th students were given a blank book to create a moon journal starting with the New Moon. Each night they have been asked to observe the moon at the same time and record an illustration with the date, time and weather conditions. Under that information I have asked them to record scientific research, data, myths or legends about the moon. There is not a specific topic to be covered but should be based on their interest. I will be checking the moon journals each Friday to make sure they are keeping up. At the end of the project they will receive a moon necklace, if they have completed the entire moon cycle.

Happy New Year Parents,
I can't believe we have already reached the middle of the year!
The class has been working so hard so I guess time has flown by. I will be adding a link to the Sign Ups page to sign up for Parent/Student/Teacher conferences. Conferences start officially on January 12th but I have a variety of dates and times available. Please be aware of your conference time and arrive on time. All conferences will begin and end at the allotted time to make sure we can fit all families in. I will be sending home progress reports before your scheduled appointment date so please keep an eye on your child's homework folder for that envelope.
I have been receiving some work on the student's Great Lives Projects but I have not seen quite a few student's work. Please look at the due date calendar for each part of their assignment. Research questions should be submitted and Research paper's rough draft are coming up soon. Students should also begin work on their visual aide project soon so they have a plan and materials they need to collect. This is an at home project so please be as supportive as possible without "doing" the work for you child.
Happy New Year and thanks so much!
Ms. Tammy

We need a parent to volunteer to pick-up pizza on Friday, December 15th. I'm attaching the sign-up here for anyone who is able to help out. Thanks ahead of time! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090F4FAEAD29A6F58-mstammys8
Pajama Drive has started. The pajama committee wants to encourage everyone to participate so our class alone can collect a pair from each class member. Last year we collected 75 pair and the year before we collected 125 pair. We would love to pass that this year to provide pj’s for homeless children and children in shelters.
We have cookie decorating next Thursday. Students need to bring their own cookies, maybe a baker’s dozen (13) so if any friends don’t have cookies they can share. I’m sending you the link to have parents sign up to send in any donations they can help out with.

White Elephant exchange is on Friday, December 15th. It is a re-gifted item or a $5 max that should be a “gag” gift. A letter will be going out written by the students to set the guidelines.
The students have also decided to bring treats in for that day on a volunteer basis. Each child will bring home a note stating what they volunteered for. They will be deciding on a movie to watch. If it is rated PG there will be a permission slip coming home also.

Dear Parents,
This has been a great first 5 weeks of school. Since the beginning of the year students have been working with peers to learn how to plan their day, set goals, keep track of goals and to complete work in a timely manner. As a class the students have worked well together to create a peaceful environment. The have been a great help to me since we do not yet have our assistant.
Academically, everyone has completed their assessments. The fourth years have delved into fractions and decimals in math as well as double/triple digit multiplication and long division. In geometry we have completed the nomenclature and proofs for lines and angles and begun work with triangles. The fifth years are working on proofs for congruency, similarity, and equivalency. In math they have been working on multiplication of decimals and fractions along with mathematical and experimental probability. The sixth years are working on the polyhedra and beginning formulas for volume using the research of early philosophers like Archimedes and Pythagoras. In math they are on the beginning steps of solving large digit square roots after completing the charts for basic squares. All students have been working on poetry, grammar and study of sentences by purpose. In history we have researched the physics of space and the earth and the timeline of life.
Next week Ms. Felicia, our new assistant will be joining us on Monday. We are so excited and I feel the children will enjoy her positive energy in the classroom. Next week Goal Setting Conferences also begin and last for two weeks. Please make time in your schedule to join us during the school day to discuss your child's goals. These conferences are student lead and all students need to be present. The sign up link is on the Sign Ups page. Please also take some time to see if you are able to help the class with Helping Hands or Books for the Classroom.
Thank you,
Ms. Tammy

We have had a great start to our year! Everyone has come to school ready to start learning and they have all been so engaged in lessons. At this time we do not yet have an assistant in the classroom but the students have taken on the role and are helping me out fantastically! Ms. Tellas has been in here helping out too so I want to give her a big thanks.
Thursday night is our Parent Orientation. It is very important for every family to send a representative adult. We will be making a project for the students so it is imperative that you at least stop by.
I want to start encouraging parents now to fill in paperwork and fingerprint clearance card applications now so we can start our going outs as soon as possible. This year it is important to remember that all drivers to any going out/fieldtrip will need a fingerprint clearance card. We are starting our history research projects so I know a few students have already begun talking about going to local museums to gather more information for their research.
See you all Thursday!

Cleaning Day! May 16th
Parents,
On Thursday we will have a deep cleaning day of the classroom. I'm asking students to bring in a couple of items to help with the process. During cleaning they pull out the shelves and sweep and vacuum. They take all the Montessori materials off the shelf and clean them well and dust the shelves and then take the furniture outside to scrub down. For this endeavor we will need additional sponges, buckets and cleaning supplies. I ask for Meyers or any other natural cleaners to help prevent any irritation to chemicals. The students do have gloves available to use during cleaning.

May 10th pool party
Parents,
The pool party permission slip was sent home today. It is also attached under the documents page. The sign up for parent drivers is under sign-ups. Please sign up to help with driving. You will need all your paperwork and fingerprint clearance turned into Ms. Barbi but we need 8 or 9 drivers in order to get all the kids to the party on May 19th. Every parent will also need to chip in $15 to help pay for the mandatory lifeguard. My Venmo is listed on the permission slip. Permission Slip and $15 are due by next Monday, May 15th.
Jen Huberty will also be sending out a link for donating food and drink items for the party and we need everyone to participate.

Dear Parents,
The Catalina trip was a huge success. I want to shout out a huge thank you to our chaperones Ryan, Paul, Bridget, and Lisa for all of their amazing help. They put your children's needs before their own and made sure they were having the best time. The students were able to try new things and break fears. They all went snorkeling and kayaking without any hesitation and discovered so many amazing facts about ocean life. Hopefully your child has had many wonderful stories to share with you.
Next Friday is optional conferences. I have contacted those parents that I need to meet with so if you have not heard from me your child will be receiving their progress report to bring home along with their portfolio. Please let me know if you have any questions. The link for times is under sign-ups.
The class pool party is being hosted by the Harkins Family. Katy and Jen will be sending out more information on that later. The date is planned for Friday, May 19th and parent drivers will be needed. If you volunteer to drive please make sure your auto information is on file in the office. You should not need chaperone clearance as you are dropping them off with me at the Harkins home but I will send more information if I find out differently.
6th Grade Celebration:
Our 6th graders will be having a special ceremony on Tuesday, May 23rd at 12:30. If you are a 6th grade parent we hope you will be able to join us. It will be a time for the children to say their goodbye's and share why their time here was so important to them. They will also hear from their younger peers about the impressions they have made here.

We are in need of a parent to pick up pizza on Friday, April 21st. Please follow the link if you think you can help us out.
www.signupgenius.com/go/4090F4FAEAD29A6F58-pizza6
Yesterday you should have received a letter from me sent by Jen. It is all the specific details about our trip in May. I will also be sending home a paper copy today, after going over the details with the class. Please let me know if you have any questions. If I have several questions come in I will send out an update with clarifications instead of answering each question individually. I will also go over any questions with the class so they can help clarify.
Thank You!
To all the parents who donated food and candy to the classroom for testing. The food was a big hit and I believe it helped energize everyone and give them a good start to their long testing days.

The first week of testing went well. We had a few kinks to work out but the students were very patient and seemed to persevere through any challenges.
Thank you to everyone who was able to donate food and snacks. It just seems to make the experience a little less painful when there is good food and sweets. I did put an extra request for kisses and jolly ranchers for Monday since we ran out today.
I will not be posting any specific information on here about our end-of-the-year trip but I will be sending out a detailed letter next week. One thing I will let you know is that we leave late on Sunday April 30th and then return late on Wednesday May 3rd to help you with any preplanning necessary.
On Monday we will be finishing the math and ela portion of the AASA test. After that all testing will be concluded unless your child missed a session. If so they will be given information at a later time regarding make-up test dates.
It looks like Jen Huberty had a great response for the end-of-the-year pool party. I believe our date is May 19th and we will need parent drivers to take children from school to the pool and back to school. More information to come soon.

Dear Parents,
It is testing time!
We will be asking you sign-up to bring snacks for the students so I'm attaching the Sign-up Genius link below. Thank you in advance for supporting the students during testing. Our testing dates are Thursday, April 13th, Friday, April 14th, and Monday, April, 17th. Each night before testing we ask that your student gets a good night's rest. The testing on the Monday is math and reading and is very rigorous. Please make sure your child is able to rest well over the weekend. I have provided for some food needs on the Sign-up Genius, however if your child requires a more special diet please send them with something similar to our menu.

On Friday I sent home a packet for Catalina Island trip to Fox Landing. Please read the attached letter to make sure you have all the forms and documents completed and turned in on time. I will be sending home more detailed travel information as we get closer to our departure date. The packet was regarding things that need attention now such as forms and possibly shopping for items on the packing list.

Winter Cookie Decorating (Click on pictures to expand)
December 7, 2022
December Activities
Pajama Drive - Our class along with Ms. Kaitlyn's Class are organizing the yearly pajama drive for local children in need. This fundraiser is paired with Scholastic to give a pair of pajamas with a book to every child in a shelter this winter. The pajamas should be brand new and the sizes should be for children 0-12. The pajamas should not have any holiday themes so as to make them shareable with all children of all beliefs and denominations. Last year we collected 120 pair of pj's so we are shooting for a higher goal this year.
Cookie Decorating - On Tuesday, December 13th Shannon Sigala has so kindly offered to provide the children with one winter cookie decorating kit from her business. She came last year and gave us all a lesson on decorating and the children really enjoyed this activity. We are also inviting the children to bring about 1/2 a dozen (6 to 8) cookies of their own to decorate. These may be themed for winter or for the child's family winter celebrations. We do have decorations left over from last year however, we will need a few fresh items to help out. The children have created an inventory which will be attached to a Sign-Up Genius Link. (I did let the children know if they don't have time to make cookies this week they could purchase simple round sugar cookies from the grocery store that can also be decorated.)
www.signupgenius.com/go/4090F4FAEAD29A6F58-cookie5
Pajama Day - On Friday, December 16th we will be having a movie day and pajama party. The students may bring snacks and games to play. The students have also asked to have a white elephant GAG gift exchange game. This is optional to students.
White Elephant Gag Gift Game - Students who choose to participate will bring a wrapped "gag" gift to school on Thursday and store it in the closet. The gift is to be kept a secret even from me and Ms. Patsy as we love to play to. The gifts are not meant to bring satisfaction of receiving a gift but to bring a laugh. I ask the children to be clever and re-gift unused items from home or to make something. If there is a need to go to the dollar store I ask that each person not spend more than $5.00. In the past if a child has brought a "nice" gift they are disappointed to receive a "gag" gift from someone else. So please stick to the challenge.
** Any student not wanting to participate will be able to play other games, read or do art!

November 7, 2022
Dear Parents,
"The child can only develop fully by means of experience in his environment. We call such experience 'work'. " Maria Montessori
Well time is flying by and we are soon coming to the end of our first semester. The students have been working very hard on engaging in self-directed projects and going outs which has been really exciting and inspiring.
Native American Heritage Month
This month students have the choice to work on a research or a project for Native American Heritage Month. Several students are planning on going to history museums or art museums. Others have been researching recipes of native American peoples in order to cook in class. In literature we are reading a story "Fancy Dancer" about a boy named Rory from the Cree nation who is trying to identify himself and where he comes from and his struggle finding the strength inside himself.
Meal Planning Projects
For the month of November we need each student presenting their meal project. I sent home the forms in October however, only a few students completed their work at home and presented. The form can be found under documents and forms and printed off at home. Some examples last month were homemade pizza's, spaghetti and meatballs, enchiladas and Costa Rican chicken and rice. Meals may be very simple if it is your child's first time to shop and cook. Please be sure to take pictures of them shopping and preparing the meal. Also, please allow your child to have their own grocery cart and a budget to purchase their own ingredients off their pre-prepared shopping list.
Artist Research
Hopefully your child has already begun their research on their artist of choice. They should probably keep a journal recording all of their research, going outs to see the artist's work, and steps in their creative journey. Please help them to be aware of due dates and steps that should be followed along the way. At the end of this there will be an artist fair where your child will be presenting to other children and families their art piece and their research. If they fall behind the art fair will not be as exciting for them as it would be if they are well prepared.

Next week the E2 will be having a Fall Festival of fun activities. The time will be 9 am to 11 am on the field and in some of the classrooms. The date is Friday, October 28th. The students will have relay races, ring tosses, photo booths, etc... This is not a Halloween activity and no costumes or Halloween decorations will be used. The students created a committee between the six classes to plan the events but now they need some supplies. The following link will take you to a sign up genius where you can volunteer to donate a few things.

Happy Fall!
Going-Outs
“The senses, being explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge. Our apparatus for educating the senses offers the child a key to guide his explorations of the world, they cast a light upon it which makes visible to him more things in greater detail than he could see in the dark, or uneducated state.”
~Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind
I wanted to ask everyone to look at the Documents and Links page and complete the volunteer paperwork and chaperoning requirements. All forms need to be turned in to the front office.
According to the school's new insurance we will probably be needing fingerprint cards for anyone acting as a chaperone on all going-outs, beginning the first of November. I know it is a bit of an inconvenience to get it done the first time however, it will allow the children better opportunities to take trips according to their classroom studies. It will also be a benefit for anyone thinking they may want to put their name in to chaperone on the Catalina trip. Any parents who are thinking about this are encouraged to join the students on going outs to get to know the children and learn the expectations of Villa for parent chaperones.
Students will be starting their art history studies and will be planning going outs to the local art museums. Hopefully many of you will be willing to help support us on those small group trips. We are striving to keep the groups between 3 to 5 to make for a more conducive learning experience.
Moon Journals
Students should be well into creating their moon journals. I have seen most of the student's books but not all. This is a nightly requirement however, if they miss one night they may check in with a friend. The pages should be filled with neat illustrations, color, data, scientific facts, and myth or lore. The journals will need to be kept over fall break as the moon cycle will not be completed until later in the month. We don't usually have trinkets for work but for those who finish we have some really beautiful stone moon necklaces. Sometimes a little motivation goes a long ways.
Catalina Trip
Our end of the year trip this year is to Catalina Island. The trip is May 1-3 but we will be leaving the school at 11:30 pm on April 30th in order to be at the morning ferry at Long Beach. Villa's billing office will be sending information about billing very soon. If you are in need of a scholarship you may contact billing directly to request the paperwork. The camp limits the number of chaperones so it will be myself and 4 parents (2 females and 2 males). The expectations are high and we will be requiring chaperones to attend a chaperone training, be able to participate in snorkeling, kayaking, and possibly hiking. All volunteers will need to have their Villa Volunteer packet filled in and background checks completed. This is an amazing trip which I have taken 4th through 6th graders on many times over the past 20 years of teaching. All the children have an amazing time and break through fears they never thought they could overcome.

Hi Parents,
I want to thank everyone who has signed up and already attended their child's goal setting conference. It is such a joy to watch them and listen to them share their successes but to also identify areas they want to make improvements in. The work of the child is deeply rooted in their ability to communicate with others, to take ownership of their learning and to make plans to always do better.
“When the child goes out, it is the world itself that offers itself to him. Let us take the child out to show him real things instead of making objects which represent ideas and closing them up in cupboards.”
— Maria Montessori
Going Outs
This past week the students began their going-outs. There were two different groups that went to the Natural History Museum to do work on time line of life research. Another group was able to go to the Pangea exhibit and had their personal historian talk to them about the life forms they were researching. Another group is planning their trip at this time to the Arizona Science Center to research the solar system and the creation story of the universe. I know they will be looking for drivers to either chaperone them at the museum or extra parents who might be able to drive and drop off with another chaperone. A big thanks to all the parents that have already given of their time.
The purpose of the going out is inline with the Montessori philosophy for the children to explore the community outside of the school grounds. The trips are intended to meet that particular group of student's needs for research. These are in place of a whole class trip where the location may only suit the interest of a handful of students and be more of a social outing. The recent going outs were planned and organized by the individual students using a series of guides along the way to make them successful.
The students will be asked to plan a going out in the near future to either gather information about choosing an artist or going to an art museum to research the artist of their choice for this year's Artist Fair. More information about this work will be sent out in October.

Hi Parents,
I can't believe it is already September. I have just set up the Goal Setting Conference schedule for the weeks of September 12th- 16th and September 19th- 23rd, so please take a minute to find a slot that will work best for you. I have offered a variety of times with early mornings and lunch times however, later afternoons are not available in my schedule. I'm looking forward to sharing your child's successes with you soon. Please be aware that all Goal Setting Conferences are student directed and your child must be present to share their plans with us.

Dear Parents,
We have had a smooth and easy transition back into our regular routine these past two weeks. Everyone is experiencing a change in expectations, as they have advanced into the next grade level. It would be nice for you to have conversations with your child about how they are making choices to get work done as the amount of lessons increase. I will be giving them the next six weeks to continue growing and working on expectations. At the end of that time we will be meeting with them to talk about their goals and listen to how they have been challenged and what successes they have had. We have talked a great deal in class about self acknowledgement for meeting goals. Sometimes the students are harder on themselves and they need to be reminded that everyone makes mistakes, and those mistakes are necessary for growth.
Thank you to everyone who was able to sign up to help the class in different ways. I will attach the links to Sign-Up Genius if you have not yet been able to volunteer in some way.
Please look over your forms and important dates from Parent Orientation. One important date is Pizza Friday begins on September 2nd.
Thank you,
Tammy

Welcome Back to the 2022 - 2023 School Year!
I can't believe the new year is here already. We have such an amazing adventure and great plans in front of us. We will be working on building a strong community and making everyone feel like Villa and their classroom is their home away from home. I also want to introduce that Ms. Patsy, who was an assistant in Ms. Christa's E1 classroom, will be assisting me this year and I am so excited to have her. Please let the children know they can introduce themselves to her on the playground Monday morning or go and ask her for help if they are unsure of what to do.
1st Day of school
*On Monday we will ask that all the students please use a wagon and bring their supplies down to the classroom. They can leave their backpacks and bags on a hook and then go to the playground.
*Class begins at 8:30 am. We will be asking that everyone enter the classroom and then wash their hands before working.
*Dismissal will be the same as last year. Carline will be dismissed to wait for you at the carline lane, walkers will gather at the walkers gate, and Circle participants will be dismissed to the slab.
(We will not have P.E. or any other specials this week so students will be told about that schedule for the second or third week of school.)
Summer Homework
*Some students have already done this but if you are unsure, your summer homework power point can be saved on your Villa email google docs so you can share your presentation with the class.
*All math packets will need to be returned no later than Friday.
Parent Orientation
Parent orientation will be held on Thursday night at 6:30 in our classroom. We will be going over the classroom plans and the school calendar and all the important dates. I will also have an "Parent" project for you to create something for your child so I hope at least one parent from each family can attend. If you are unable to attend please reach out and let me know what day you can come to complete the project.

Dear Parents,
We are so close to the end of a really great year! I want to take some time to reflect on all of our successes and all the help and support you all provided.
This year I have appreciated having the opportunity to come back to some type of normalcy and connect with parents. From the meet and greet that we had at the beginning of the year, to parent volunteers coming in to teach and work with the students, picking up pizza, delivering flowers and paper plates, to parents driving on going-outs and helping with our camping trip; it has been a joy working with and getting to know all of you. I hope to continue with those of you who will be returning next year. So please be thinking of what skills you have that you might want to share with the class!
For sixth grade parents, thank you for sharing your child with us for the last several years. They are amazing children with big hearts and curious minds. I know that I send them off knowing they will do great things in this world.
To parents returning I'm looking forward to an amazing year with this group of strong, independent learners. Also a heads-up that the summer homework packet will be coming out soon.
Today everyone is bringing progress reports home so have a look in their backpacks for a folder with the document.
Thanks for all you do,
Tammy

Science Fair
At this it looks like everyone is started on their Science Fair ideas and research.
Journals should be started: I recommended that every student get a small journal, maybe a composition book to begin making notes on their planning, observation and experimenting. They may even need to experiment with changing some of their ideas.
Camp Triangle Ranch
All forms were sent home on Monday so please take time to read over the letter and return your forms by Friday March 4th. (Late forms will be accepted as we are still missing a few students.)
War in Ukraine
As a school we will not be discussing the war in Ukraine for any lessons. If the students ask questions I will talk to them only about the facts. I have watched a video provided by admin that gives clear unopinionated facts. It is not a video I would share with students, they would probably find it boring. But I will attach it here if you would like to watch it or share parts with your child. We will try to discourage the students having conversations with one another.

Classroom Activities-
This week was very busy. We finished our Ancient Civilization Reports and are now moving on to presenting Focus Group projects and Wind, Weather, Climate and Atmosphere projects. By Friday all the Earth Cycles will have completed their reports. (If your child was out at the end of the week let them know all their projects, slide shows, science experiments and note cards should be ready to share with the class by Monday/Tuesday). Luckily the students had most of the day Friday to work in their groups and get their presentations together.
Testing did happen on Tuesday. Unfortunately it was a little stressful as the computers were challenging us. We did finish the writing field-test in the afternoon with just minutes to spare. All of the glitches that happened that day will make sure we are prepared for the worst when real testing is upon us. The students were all troopers!
This week we introduced Black History Month and are encouraging all the students to come up with a topic to research and present at the end of the month. Students are welcome to research people, places, events, food, clothing, literature and other artistic contributions that were specifically in America, any other country, or any other time in history.
For the rest of the Spring we will be diving into American History. We have put together booklets for the students for them to make their own “American History Book.” There are different chapters for the different eras from Colonization in the 1600’s to The Post War of 1945. The students will choose an event, group of events, people, governmental structures, or Presidents from the different eras to do a short research and presentation. Hi Parents,
I would normally put this on the Weebly but I’m concerned not everyone is reading the updates. We are in need of some assistance so please volunteer if you are available.

As they share with their classmates they will take notes to fill up their history book.

Dear Parents,
We have a lot going on over the next few weeks so I thought I would post the updates here.
February 1st- Arizona Field Testing Writing Test
February 1st- Sending home the Science Fair Packet. (Please read over with your child at home.)
February 7th- Valentine Grams go on sale (Please send in a package of Hershey's Kisses for donations)
February 14th- We do not do whole class Valentine exchange. However, the children can draw a name to make a homemade Valentine for one person.
Writing test
Tomorrow please make sure your child has had a healthy breakfast and wearing comfortable clothing. The testing is expected only to take an hour and a half but each child will be allowed to test the entire day if needed as there is no time limit. Students may not wear or bring any electronics into the classroom. If they choose not to leave them at home and they place them in their backpack Villa will not be responsible for any loss or damage.
Valentine Grams
It has been a while since we last provided Valentine Grams. So for those of you who are new to this it is a fundraiser used to provide scholarships for end of the year trips in E2. There will be forms you can fill out for your child or that your child can fill out for a classmate or friend. There are different options available. If any child has not been given a Valentine Gram the school will send them the basic Hershey kiss sample bag so they don't feel left out. If you would prefer they not receive this then please email me. The school does ask for the children to donate the bags of kisses. Please send only chocolate and no nuts.
Science Fair Packet
The packet is very self explanatory but the children will need you to go over it with them. Parent participation should be limited to supporting finishing work on time, giving adult supervision if necessary and gathering supplies. The majority of the work needs to be completed independently by your child. Their paper and projects must be completed by them. Please put the due dates up somewhere that you are all looking at to help keep them on track. Our class will not be completing each step for points but they will be expected to complete a self evaluation at the end of the project in order to assess their successes and challenges.
Home made Valentines
We like to keep Valentines thoughtful so anyone who wants to participate can join in making a homemade card for whoever's name they draw. I would ask that parents provide their child with supplies to make an original card for their friend. We have done this in the past and it has been more meaningful then collecting commercial cards that just get thrown in the trash. The Valentine may include candy. Below are some images of internet ideas for fun cards.

Dear Parents,
Last week I sent out an email for Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences. If you did not see the email I am attaching the link here for you to sign up. Please read the opening letter carefully as I have In-Person and Zoom meeting times separated. The Zoom meetings will be shorter as we will not really be able to go over your child's portfolio, which is the main purpose of this meeting. At those meetings your child will share their successes and future goals and then bring home their portfolio.

Giving Thanks!
I wanted to take a minute to say thank you to those of you who have given your time to support our classroom. Two weeks ago Michael Book and Ryan Hurley for moving our new, very heavy picnic tables into our outdoor work spaces. Last week Ricki Uster came in and helped the students get the garden up and running with new plants and future seedlings. Over the next several weeks we will also have a Government/History presentation by Greg Stanton, an US Airforce presentation by Brian Crawford, and a cookie decorating demonstration by Shannon Sigala. I will try to upload pictures of our activities.
For everyone celebrating Thanksgiving have a wonderful time with your families and friends!
Parent Chaperones and Volunteers
Villa first wanted me to ask all parents who will be on campus or driving for a going out to do a Covid Self Assessment before arriving to campus. https://www.maricopa.gov/5512/Sick-or-Exposed-to-COVID-19#symptoms
On the documents/links page I have also downloaded the schools Chaperone Handbook and Forms that need to be completed before a going out. If you have done a background check previously please just check your dates for validity. All chaperones will have to turn in a copy of their insurance and drivers license to the front office as well as the background check when completed.
Classroom Studies and Activities
Over the past month we have begun a wide variety of studies and research projects.
All of the children have been engaged in a focus group. The topics were Automobiles, Fashion, Music and Sports. They were allowed to choose a topic unless the group was already filled. They will be creating a presentation with their group that wil include the historical and geographical aspects of the topic. The group will be required to prepare a physical visual aide, a slide show, videos, and posters of their research to share with the rest of the class.
In history the 4th years are further investigating Early Humans by reading the book "The Boy of the Painted Caves" and the 5th and 6th graders are researching Ancient Civilizations.
In Science we had a big presentation on the model of the cell and the students made cell cookies. We will continue studying different types of cells in the body and their functions. We have also begun talking about Nutrition and will be talking about what makes up the food we eat, such as vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, sugars and sodium. Our goal is to make a link between what we eat and what our cells need to do their jobs. The students were all surprised to learn that we need plenty of fats in order to have healthy cells!

Parent Volunteers
I want to thank all of the parents who reached out to present or assist the classroom. I'm really looking forward to having you join us and share your expertise. I still need quite a few parents to sign up on the Sign-Up genius page for Flowers for November 1st and Pizza Delivery drivers for later in the year. Also we may need some volunteers to coordinate that can bring us the new picnic tables that have been assembled for our outdoor environment. They are extremely heavy and it may take four parents at once to bring one table. I will try to organize something with Jennifer Huberty, our classroom coordinator.
Covid Vaccines
As many of you have heard the Covid Vaccine for students 5 to 11 are approved. For those of you who plan on having your child vaccinated I would just like to suggest making appointments on Fridays or Thursday afternoons when possible. We have had several children absent for multiple days from having side effects and reactions. My concern would be that they could miss several days of important lessons if they are out for a while.

Meal Planning Projects Continue
The meals the students have been preparing are impressive and look delicious. Most of all I wish you could see how proud they are of themselves when they present and share their successes. They have all been inspired by one another and talk a lot about cooking and what they want to make at home. I know it is an activity that takes time and preparation but we are seeing the positive influence of the work here at school. Last month many of the students put off their meal planning presentations to the very end of the month and there really wasn't time to present. So we will see if this month goes any smoother. If it gets backed up again then I will be assigning students presentation dates so they will need to work with you to finish their meal preparation and presentation by the due date/presentation date. I will let you know by the end of the month what our plans are.
Cinammon
A few of our students did some independent research and have invested in a class pet. Her name is Cinnamon and she is a Mexican Red Knee Tarantula. The group involved the whole class in naming her and they are going to work with everyone who would like to learn more about caring for her. Just to let parents know our class is extremely limited in what types of pets we can have because they have certified our class as use for afterschool. Therefore DHS tells us that we may not have any reptiles and Villa doesn't allow us to have birds or mammals. I think the children have made a great choice as I have had a pet tarantula in a previous class and it taught us more then the traditional pet.
Class Garden
At this time I have a few students who have been wanting to make plans for our garden but just haven't gotten in the swing of things. I am not an avid gardener and would like to request the help of a parent who would like to come into the class to teach about plants or even just help develop the garden into something beautiful. We have all new soil donated by several families but we need someone with a green thumb who would like the opportunity to support us.
Parents who would like to give presentations
At this time we are looking for ways to include parents back into the Villa community. I thought it would be a great time for parents who have a special knowledge or skill to come and teach us. In the past I have had parents teach a science experiment, teach art, present information on stocks and investments, and even just come and tell about their unique or successful career. Please reach out to me or Jen Huberty if you think you have something you would like to share or present.

Meal Planning Projects:
Due to conferences, and partially our schedule, we haven't had many students present their September Meal Planning Project. We will try to fit those in over the next week. However, if they haven't presented by October 1st they may end up presenting twice in October.
Hopefully everyone has had the opportunity to help support their child in having a successful experience. I want to remind everyone that this is a homework assignment due once a month. The reason for making it an assignment is the wealth of experience that your child will gain from completing this task. They will see their own skills grow and develop over the year as well as empower them to feel a sense of independence that they can care for themselves and others. They must also complete the Meal Planning form which can be found below. It should include all of their planning steps, their receipts, and end-of-meal questionnaire.
Pizza Friday:
Remember next Friday is Pizza Friday. so your child will need to still pack their snacks and any toppings they would like to add.
I will also be attaching a link for Pizza Delivery Volunteers. Due to our schedules this year there is only 15 minutes when we are not with students. In the past we had an hour lunch and had time to go pick up the pizza's ourselves. This year I set up a volunteer form for anyone who could offer to pick the pizzas up for us and deliver them to school. You would have the opportunity to pick up your child and take them with you, allowing them to be the Pizza Delivery Person for the week if you choose to. Otherwise they could be the person to come get the pizzas from your car. If you are able to support us I would appreciate it greatly.

Dear Parents,
I will attach the link to join the Zoom meeting for your child's conference here. If you forget your time please go to the Sign-up Genius link. The meetings are short but we will have plenty of time for your child to share the goals they've set. In the meeting your child will read their goals, I will ask for clarification if needed, and then I will share how we will support the goals in class. If there is still time then I will have you share how you can support your child with their goals. If time is running out then we will send home their goal setting sheet for you to discuss more at home. I will be encouraging every family to talk to their children on the way to school each day about what their goals for work will be that day. That helps put them in a mindset of being prepared for class.

Dear Parents,
I can't believe it is already September and almost time for conferences.
Conferences
On the Sign Ups Page you will find a link for Fall Goal Setting Conference times. These conferences will have to be virtual since the campus is still closed to parents. This is not ideal but we will do our best. I will be sending out a Zoom Meeting link before they begin and I will bring you in from the "waiting room" when it is your time. I will ask that you be mindful of our limited time and we will have to end as soon as our time is up in order to fit everyone into the schedule. In the past I was able to offer more morning meetings but now we have the children in our rooms instead of the playground so I have only been able to provide a few. I have also tried to offer a few lunch time meetings if needed. Otherwise we only need a short amount of time from you so, I hope you all sign up.
The purpose of these conferences are for your child to share how they have adjusted since the beginning of the year and/or grown since last year. They will also be sharing key points from a goal setting sheet. This sheet will go home with them so that you can discuss it in more detail over the semester.
The key points that I'm looking for at this time are things like Time Management and Care of Self. When the child is in control of themselves I usually see the greatest amount of growth. When they are challenged by having to do things independently this is probably also a challenge for them with their school work. Before conferences I would encourage you to observe your child and how they use their independent time and how do they respond to doing tasks associated with self care around the house. I would like you to bring some of those observations to the conference so we can see if they are having similar growth or similar challenges in both environments.
Pizza Friday
Today I have sent home a sign-up for Pizza Friday beginning October 1st. We have decided at this time to just order cheese pizza to simplify the serving process. In the past it was a job for students to divide the pizza up and serve people in line for what flavor they wanted. We're trying to avoid this involved serving process so at this point so we discussed with the class having them bring in a bag of their own toppings. I know this is not as fun however, we're just excited to be able to offer something at this time. If the circumstances change we will go back to cheese and pepperoni. You may send cash or a check made out to Tammy Becker or you many Venmo or Zelle the money. If you need a different payment plan please contact me directly and we can work something out.
All forms should be in by September 20th and all payments should be submitted. Pizza forms are on the links and documents page if you need to print a new one.

Dear Parents,
On Friday I sent home the instructions and the worksheet for the Meal Planning Project. I will put a copy on Weebly so that you can access additional sheets for each month's project. The students have all been watching a variety of presentations of those who began cooking so they should have an idea of where to start.

Dear Parents,
I want to welcome our new families to our classroom. If you have any questions you can email me at [email protected] or Jennifer Huberty at [email protected].
On this page you will see a tab for Supplies. Here you will find your grade specific supply list with color specific notebooks. The colors are mandatory to help with classroom management.
The welcome letter from administration mentioned bringing in scrapbooking paper. We do not need any in our classroom so please exclude that from your shopping list.
Summer Homework
Each child brought home a homework packet at the end of May. It included math, reading and journaling. The homework is meant not to develop new concepts but to build on prior learning and stay fresh through the summer. All students will be presenting their book study to the class the first week of school so please be sure your child is reading now. On the Summer Homework tab I have included the math and reading masters if you have lost any part of your packet. The math packet will be due in class on Friday, August 13th. If homework is not returned at that time students may be assigned study hall the following week to complete unfinished work.
Developing Independence and Responsibility at the E2 Level
This year we will be returning to our strong Montessori foundations. Last year we had a type of hybrid to assist with online learning and we are so thankful for all the resources we had however, this year we will be focused on using the Montessori materials and staying on track with the Montessori curriculum. Part of that will be continuing to develop strong practical life skills which reflect in care of self, care of environment, and care of community. The first expectation for the home will be that all children need to be preparing their own lunches. I encourage them to do so the night before so there isn't a great deal of rushing or panicking before heading to school each morning. In order to prepare I would encourage you to begin the process by having the children pre-planning good lunches. The students in my room who pack their own lunch give more attention to their food and tend to eat better. The dietary information students can learn from this activity will set them up to be healthier eaters as they grow. In class we will be discussing appropriate food choices and serving sizes. Another activity that we will be implementing will be a monthly home cooking project. We will be asking each child to plan, budget, shop for, and cook a meal once a month. Delegating tasks to other family members will also be a part of this activity. These meals can be as simple as grilled cheese and macaroni salad or possibly preparing a stir-fry. Each child will give a presentation with data and pictures/videos on how their meal planning and preparation went. To prepare for this I would suggest including your child in your meal planning process so they feel somewhat prepared when this begins the end of August. I have done this with my own children when they were quite young so don't hesitate to try this with younger siblings.
The Role of the Parent in the Development of Independence
Independence is one of the most important ideas in Montessori philosophy. Allowing your child to do activities and work on their own (i.e. caring for themselves, their environment, their home responsibilities) breeds self-confidence, self-awareness, and independence.
Montessorians believe that you should never do for a child what they can do for themselves. As a parent, I am aware that in the home environment this philosophy is not always easy. However, when we can give children a chance to act independently, we should. When parents interfere with a child’s independence, they become an obstacle in their education and development. We are sending the message that they are not capable, which can significantly inhibit their confidence and growing sense of independence. When life allows, it is important to let children make their own sandwiches, do their own laundry, cook with us, and care for their environment. The tasks may not always be done quickly or perfectly, but the advantages of giving these opportunities are priceless. This is the best way for you to support their education by teaching Montessori at home.
We will have more opportunities through the year to discuss opportunities for developing independence.

Dear Parents,
This year instead of Valentine Grams we decided to make homemade Valentine cards to an individual class member. This person is anonymous until the valentines are passed out. Everyone has picked a piece of paper with a child's name and allergies on it. This is the person your child will be creating a valentines card for. Forms have been sent home to confirm that your child can participate in this activity. These homemade valentine cards need to be brought in to class this Thursday and should contain a small candy treat. The candy is expected because we all voted on it and agreed everyone should include it. Due to Covid Villa will not be offering Valentine Grams so we thought this would be a fun alternative.
Sincerely,
Isa and Soleil

Dear Parents,
Next week we will be having SPIRIT WEEK! The students on Remote learning are encouraged to participate also.
Monday- Pajama Day
Tuesday- Wear a Rainbow Day
Wednesday- Crazy Hair Day
Thursday- Super Hero T-Shirt Day
Friday- Favorite Book Character Day
I want to give a reminder that some students who are remote learners have not been showing up at the 2:30 meeting on Zoom. Those meetings are Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. It is a mandatory lesson time and I have been giving assignments. If children are home sick for an extended period they should also attend so they don't fall behind on potential lessons/assignments.
Have a great weekend!
Tammy

Goal Setting Information
Dear Parents,
This week we began speaking to the children about their personal, social emotional, and academic goals for the year. I have them filling in a goal sheet that I want them to work on alone. If they need help Ms. Gilda or I will be assisting them to brainstorm, according to their past successes and challenges. After that I will email you what they have come up with. We will then be asking you if you would like to add some comments to their sheet about the goals they set.
I want to be positive at this time due to the abnormal year they have been having. I will be encouraging the students to set goals that are about self-growth, feeling inspired and meeting new challenges, not about how they have functioned during quarantine or on the computer. I have seen students struggle with giving attention to detail where normally they are very precise. I have seen others unable to complete full assignments when usually they are able to complete all work and ask for more. I know this is a product of not being in the classroom and having a typical school experience. The growth I will be looking for as we return to class is how do they use their time, what effort do they put into their work, can they persevere through a challenging task, and what joy are they gaining from the work they are engaged in.
As the Montessori Philosophy states, in the second plane of development, from 6 to 12 years old, the child possesses a "rational mind" to explore the world with imagination and abstract thinking. Another aspect I will be looking at for goal setting is the importance of the “Prepared Environment,” which the children have not had access to for the last six months. Dr. Montessori described the goal of the prepared environment as follows: “The first aim of the prepared environment is, as far as it is possible, to render the growing child independent of the adult.” The prepared environment, therefore, is one of the core components of the Montessori philosophy. According to Dr. Montessori, the learning environment, and everything that the child comes into contact with should foster independent learning and exploration. It is not just the materials but the interactions with peers and teachers and the movement of “big” work. We have seen our children need a great deal of adult direction and dependence on us for help over the past months. One of my main goals as we move forward will be to continually direct them towards more independence where appropriate.
All student's Goals will be emailed to you by Wednesday, September 16th. If you don't recieve them then I may not have received your child's completed forms. They were asked to complete them by Monday and I met with In-Person learners to get them started but Remote learners may need a reminder from you. I will be available to meet with parents via Zoom who need help interpreting the goals. I would ask you to contact me directly if you would like to set something up.
We are excitedly looking forward to transitioning the children safely back on campus and setting applicable goals in relation to the Villa classroom. I know that this will bring them back to a place of familiarity, peace, and comfort.
Thanks for all your support,
Tammy

In-Person Learners Literature Study: Julie of the Wolves
Parents of In-Person Learners:
We are now beginning Julie of the Wolves as our class novel study. We will be going through each part of the book together. The timing is important and all children were asked not to read ahead. For this first week they were assigned Part 1: Amoroq the Wolf and should not read past that section. If you were unable to get the book which was on the supply list you will need to contact me to set up a time that you can pick one up to borrow from me in car line. I can put them out in car line but I do not want them sitting out over the weekend where they could be damaged. If your child has a challenge reading this book then you can read aloud to them or they can download an audio version (which should be available for free on the Phoenix Library website if you have a library card). The students still need a physical copy to follow along with so they are reading with the audio and learning the discipline of scanning the page and identifying vocabulary.
(I DO RECOMMEND THIS SAME TECHNIQUE FOR ALL STUDENTS THAT ARE STRUGGLING WITH READING AND HAVE SEEN MANY NON-READERS BECOME AVID READERS USING THIS RESOURCE, IF DONE CORRECTLY.)
Remote Learners may go ahead and purchase the book if they are planning on returning to the classroom October 19th. We will be reading only one part a week and won't be done by that date if they want to join us. If they read ahead they won't be able to participate in group discussions so please ask them to stick to the one part per week.

Dear Parents,
I want to clarify how students are being divided into the new learning groups.
Remote Learners are those children who will not be returning to school for in person learning (tentatively September 28th). They will be entering a remote learning Google Classrooms hosted by Ms. Clare.
In-Person Learners are the students who have made the choice to return to campus as soon as it opens (tentatively September28th). These children do not have any new classrooms to join nor a new schedule so their routine is the same next week.
Below I’m attaching the Remote Learner codes your child should have received from Ms. Clare. This code will be their new Google Classroom along with Ms. Tammy’s Cultural Classroom for their cultural groups/works/projects.
These codes are for the Remote Learners only. In-Person learners will stay in their current grade level Google Classroom with me until we return to campus.
IMPORTANT:
Each morning all students will use the Daily Meeting Zoom link, which will be on the Cultural Classroom, to join us at 9:00 am. After that meeting Remote Learners will need to attend their scheduled meeting with Ms. Clare or Mr. David. In-Person learners will continue with the same schedule they have had with me and Ms. Gilda. At 2:00 Remote Learners will return to my “whole class” meeting for the end of the day and presentations. All Remote Learner’s parents received an email from Clare Broyles with the schedule. If you don’t see it in your inbox then please check your “junk” or “spam” folder. If you still do not see it email Ms. Clare directly as I do not have her schedule nor access to her Google Classrooms, [email protected].
I do not have direct links and was only sent the codes that you can enter on the Google Classroom. Click the + at the top right on Google Classroom to enter the code to join, if you didn’t receive the code directly in your or your child’s email.

Dear Parents,
I want to first celebrate how well the children are doing in class. We are having a learning curve of the normal beginning year revving up, with higher expectations for 4th graders and the new responsibilities for 5th and 6th graders, but overall everyone seems to be adjusting.
I have told them the "Honeymoon" period is over, so assignments need to be kept up with and turned in on time. If they don't adjust to balancing their assignments online they will have a challenging time in class. I'm very insistent on the students learning how to spread the work out over the week. I made an analogy for them that doing one weeks worth of math in one day would be like eating all your meals for the week on Sunday, not having anything to eat the rest of the week. When they binge then they don't have consistent practice over the week, which at this age doesn't suit their brain development for learning patterns. On the other hand some students will procrastinate until the last day and then try to finish everything, and this has some harmful stress inducers attached to it. So I'm looking for routine practice in a variety of topics. This would be a great topic of discussion for the dinner table to help condition strong habits.
Assignments:
I've heard a few questions about assignments. I don't assign new assignments just because a student finished the previous weeks assigned work due to the above statement about working ahead of the schedule. Also, setting up online busy work isn't conducive to the Montessori philosophy and we will be approaching topics as similarly as possible to our in-class routine. If we were in the classroom the work is set up for children to be self-directed but online I am unable to make assignments individualized. The children are welcome to practice a variety of IXL topics on their own at any time they wish.
So the pattern of assignments follows a weekly schedule:
Monday- Cultural lessons/Follow-up
Tuesday- Math/Geometry lesson/New math assignments posted
Wednesday- Grammar lessons/New grammar assignments posted.
Thursday- Literature Studies/New assignments posted
Friday- Weekly Check-ins
Cultural Classroom and Cultural Groups:
For the transition to Remote learning the children enrolled for that will be removed from their regular Google Classroom. Due to the fact that we are going to continue having all the children working on cultural lessons together I have created a Cultural Classroom with all the children. Most have accepted the invitation and entered the new classroom but a few still have not clicked on the link. They may need your help with this. Having this new classroom will give them a way to communicate through the Stream and set up meetings with one another. They have also been placed into Cultural groups in order to complete projects with one another. These groups will stay the same for several more weeks unless we have to shift a few people around. Our goal is to continue building the classroom culture of students relying on one another. It will also help when we eventually get everyone back in the classroom.
Assessments:
So I want to thank those of you who were able to turn in parts of your assessment packets. On Thursday Ms. Gilda and I will split the students into two groups to have them take the Morris-McCall Spelling assessment while on a Zoom meeting. This paper will then need to be photographed and sent to us digitally or you may turn it in with the blue folder at school by this Friday. If you are out of town then you may bring the work to turn in next Monday.
If summer homework has not yet been turned in please do that as soon as possible. Books reports are still being given but we need to have those all done by Friday.

Dear Parents,
Assessments:
For this week I have assigned your child several assessments that need to be completed. You can help by reminding them to follow-up.
Many have already finished their STAR Math and STAR Reading however, there are a few children who have only done one or neither. Please do not assist them in any way finishing this online assessment.
Writing Assessment- This is due by Friday. This is a written response to three articles covering one topic. Please do not assist your child with this work. (I will go over the process on Monday in our level meetings. The most important thing is that they read the instructions on the final page and do their best to reference information from each of the articles included. I have asked that they print the articles off so they can highlight and underline facts that they may want to use in their paper.)
Assessment Packets- These packets are available in the carline area. Your child simply needs to fill in as many math problems as possible. Remember, this is an assessment so they shouldn't know how to do all of it. (If they don't know any of it we know where to place them in the classroom curriculum. The spelling will be administered by Ms. Gilda. All papers will then be turned back in at the school when completed. The boxes for turning in are provided in carline.) I have attached the document links on the next page if you need to download and print because you're out-of-town.
Google Classroom Update:
This weekend I had Google Classroom send you an update on your child's activity. This past week I added scores to some of the assignments so your child could learn to gage how they were doing. I will not be considering these GRADES, but using them temporarily to get the students to create better work habits. The most important aspect of the progress and Returned work is to read the comments I posted so they can begin doing the future assignments correctly to meet the expectations. The most important one is that students should be setting 6 Daily Goals of specific works they are going to do that day every morning at 8:30. For example: Noun Card 1, 4th Math Assignment on LCM, Write a Creation Story, Making North America Website practice, complete DEAR response, Research a life form from the Timeline of Life.
If you're not receiving updates please look for an invite from Google Classroom in your inbox or spam. As of Sunday I had everyone entered and invited.

Monday Morning Zoom Meeting
Monday, August 10th
Dear Parents,
Hopefully everyone has had good luck signing in to Google Classroom and you won't need this link. However, if you are experiencing difficulties you should use the link provided below. This link will be used for all meeting times this week. The school is doing their best to offer support and get things moving, so hopefully all glitches will be ironed out soon.
One thing I want for everyone is to know that we are supporting you all through these challenges and completely understand if your child isn't able to do everything at first. Any activities missed will be made up later.
Tomorrow we will begin together at 8:30, however on other days students will begin planning their day and starting their work from 8:30 - 9:00 and then the meeting will begin at 9:00. This is the routine we have in class so it will make for an easy transition when we return to the classroom.

IXL is being used for our math and language work during this online time. At this moment I have not received login information for myself or the students from Villa. As soon as I have that available I will be assigning the students follow-up practice on that platform. I will also take time to show them how to access their work and the amount to complete.

Dear Parents,
Artist Fair creations need to be photographed and submitted on the Google Classroom by your child. I am creating a really fun "virtual" art gallery to display their work since we were unable to have our Art Walk. Any art not submitted will be excluded, which would be especially disappointing if they worked hard on completing their project.
When the gallery is complete I will attach the link here on the Weebly page.
Thank you,
Tammy

Updates for May 2020
Dear Parents,
It's hard to believe but we only have 2 1/2 weeks of school left. This week I lightened the work a little and next week I will do the same. We will be using the final week to catch up on missed assignments, which you can see on your child's Google Classroom. We will also take some time to be sharing Art History Fair projects.
I want you to know how proud I am of all the children. They have really stepped up and made the most of this time. It is a crazy somewhat sad time but we still have so much to celebrate. I love this community!
Please read over the information provided below regarding picking up your child's books and supplies from class, 6th grade celebration and progress reports:

We will be using the final week to catch up on missed assignments, which you can see on your child's Google Classroom. We will also take some time to be sharing Art History Fair projects.
I want you to know how proud I am of all the children. They have really stepped up and made the most of this time. It is a crazy somewhat sad time but we still have so much to celebrate. I love this community!
Please read over the information provided below regarding picking up your child's books and supplies from class, 6th grade celebration and progress reports:
- Personal cubby items will be available for pickup next week Tuesday, May 5- Friday, May 8 between the hours of 9-2pm. Items are bagged and labeled with the child's name and will be located beneath the backpack hooks on classroom porches. The campus can only be accessed through the carline gates. All buildings (including the administration building) are closed and locked and cannot be accessed. Families should practice social distancing while on the campus and should simply pick up their items and exit the school grounds promptly.
- Progress reports will be sent to parents on May 18th with optional conference times available May 19 and 20th. I will contact if I need to meet with you for a conference. If you have any concerns please let me know and we will set up an appointment.
Dear Parents and Students,
There are three ways students can submit work through the Google Classroom. Please choose the method that is best for your student and family.
1.Once you complete the work, you can upload the document to the assignment. After clicking on the view assignment, you will see a little box on the right. The box will have blue button that says ‘mark as done’. Above this button you will see a white button that says ‘add or create’ click this button. From here you can upload from google doc, google slide, and/or attach a file (which could be an image, scan, word doc, etc.). Once you attach the assignment, click mark as done, and leave a private comment stating that you attached the work.
2. You can email the document to me. Once you email the document to me, you can ‘mark as done’ under the assignment. Then leave a private comment stating that you emailed the work to me.
3. Lastly, a parent can email me specifically and state that child finished the work. The student then needs to leave a private comment stating that parent has emailed confirmation of work completed.
In order to receive credit, I need to have a comment for each assignment, stating how the work was turned in.
I hope that this is helpful to you all to support the turn in process of assignments.
Sincerely,
Tammy

Work expectations and meeting times
Dear Parents,
Meetings
Each week I'm holding meetings for the grade levels. These meetings are mandatory unless I hear from you that your child can not make it.
Tuesday's at 10 am - 4th Grade
Wednesday's at 10 am - 5th Grade
Thursday's at 10 am - 6th Grade
I'm also doing 1-on-1 meetings on video chats with those that need help logging into their accounts or help with their work. I have let the student's know but you may remind them that with high usage sometimes a site is not available. When that happens they will need to try again later. Ms. Gilda is also available each morning on the Google Classroom when students are struggling with work or logging in. They can email her directly on the Google Classroom under the People tab. The students are now being directed to the new math site IXL. I gave them their usernames and passwords but if they lost it they need to email me individually.
Work Expectations
1 Math daily (about 10 minutes)
1 Reading daily (about 15 minutes)
1 Spelling daily (about 10 minutes)
1 to 2 times a week (or until assignment is complete)- Science (about 15 minutes)
1 to 2 times a week (or until assignment is complete) - History (about 15 minutes)
1 Writing assignment a week (an hour in the week - spread out over 5 days)
(No more than 3 hours a day on the computer. I've timed it out that if they are focused (no messaging and chatting) they can get that down to about 1 1/2 hours a day)
Computers!!!
Parents, if your child does not have a computer to use on their own or if their computer is not adequate to link to the sites we are using then I encourage you to contact the school to borrow a computer. There is not a computer for every student however, they will be signed out on a first come first serve basis. You will have to a sign a waiver but this would be a great resource for some of you.
New codes for khan academy
Parents, our Khan Academy site gliched and I had to make an entirely new account. Everyone is downloaded from the Google Classroom, however only students with the [email protected] account survived. I will list the students below who need to connect their child's [email protected] account below. I am able to do a video conference with them to help them log on but they will need to send me an email requesting a conference time.

Dear Families,
I want to thank all of you for your patience and your support during this time. The technology we've been using is super helpful yet all the steps it takes to make it work correctly are tedious. For some reason many of the Khan Academy accounts have not been linked to the Google Classroom, or if they were made with a username other than the [email protected] account, I am unable to see their progress. I want to meet with several students today at 10 am to do a live lesson on how to connect their accounts. I will be sending them a direct invitation through the google classroom to join. At that time I plan on having other students who have been successful to connect to share their screen and walk everyone through the process. Our goal is just to have everyone's work accounted for. Another goal is to help your child be as self-sufficient as possible so that you are not having to assist them through their day. If you are having difficulties please send me an email and if needed I will give you my phone number so we can walk through the steps.
This week has been our trial-and-error period and hopefully next week I can have more direct time with students in smaller groups chats and video meetings. With that being said they will need access to both Zoom, Google Chat and Google Meet. I believe it is an app that some students have had to download so please assist your child in finding out if they have access to those platforms.
I know I set my office hours for 11 to 12 but as those of you who have contacted me know I am making myself available into the evenings. I know I can't keep this schedule going but please don't hesitate to reach out. I want to make this as easy as possible on the children as we move forward but I also want to hold them accountable for following up on tasks.
Thank you so much,
Ms. Tammy

Dear Families,
Thank you for your support and encouragement! As we get ready to unroll our official remote learning classrooms through Google Classroom for older students, or Seesaw for younger students (or a hard copy of the curriculum for those that need it), we want to set out some guidelines and provide you with the latest updates.
If your child is participating in the online class work:
- The school days start tomorrow and will take place Monday-Friday. Students must check-in daily and complete the assigned work. The academic work time is 3-4 hours each day to be done when he/she can access the online materials. Each teacher has a suggested schedule with practical life and physical activities included.
- Our online community requires the same grace and courtesy as our campus community. The online classroom is NOT the place for negative comments or private conversations. If parents or students have a concern, they should email the teacher directly.
- Assignments posted have due dates and are required work. Independent projects and supplemental work are encouraged but are secondary to the posted assignments.
- Grade 4-6 homework is available electronically in you Google Classroom or for pickup tomorrow in the carline between 12-4pm. Please pick up either an A packet or a B packet from your teacher’s box (your child will know).
- Hardcopies of the curriculum will be available in the carline area Monday between 12-4pm for pickup. If you requested a hard copy, please find your packet with your name on it in your teacher’s box. If you did not request a packet, we will have some extra packets for pick up.
- Grade 4-6 homework is available for pickup tomorrow in the carline between 12-4pm. Please pick up either an A packet or a B packet from your teacher’s box (your child will know).
- The school day start tomorrow. The academic work time is 3-4 hours each day for five days per week. Each teacher has a suggested schedule with practical life and physical activities included.
- Assignments are broken down into work per week and should be completed as assigned. Independent projects and supplemental work are encouraged but are secondary to the classroom assignments.
- All hard copy assignments will be due upon return to school.
Sincerely,
Christy Cantu

Hi Friends!
This is an idea for your daily schedule. Please take note that you should be doing about 3 hours of school work a day. The ideas on this schedule are more specific for next week when we have the Google Classroom started. For now please go the Documents/Links on the Left Hand Side of the page and then go to the various websites. By Friday you should have been able to complete the 4 daily exercises on Scholastic and at least 4 daily practices of math from one of the math sites. Other than that you should be working on your Artist project! I have spoken with a few of you on what you have in mind so thank you for connecting with me. I have only received 1 sixth graders paper so I need to see 10 very soon. If you have questions please email me, sooner rather than later. Also let me remind 6th graders that your paper should be lengthy! I'm suggesting at least 4 pages. If you don't have that then you should be communicating with me on how to gather more information on your research topic.

Dear Parents and Students,
I hope all of you were able to take the past week and rest and enjoy your family time together. As we now face this new challenge, we want to be here to support you during your time at home.
We are working hard behind the scenes to put learning opportunities in place to help you stay current with your education while at home. We appreciate your patience and support and will do the same for all of you. We will encourage you to send emails at this time and then over the next 2 weeks we will have office hours where we will answer questions in the order we receive them immediately.
The team has been working on a packet curriculum that will take you through 2 weeks of school, and in case school closures are extended we will have a plan in place. Once this packet is complete the school will be providing hard copies and virtual copies.
This week, however, we have provided a list of learning opportunities that we would like to you complete. This includes; math, reading, other academic subjects, pe and music. As you work, I would ask that you keep a journal, notes, or take pictures of works that you are completing. It always helps to feel motivated when you know you are being held accountable. So, if and when your parents or sitters ask you to do some work please cooperate and do your best! I’ll be cheering you on and would love to see pictures of you, your vacation (if you want to share), and your HOME work (that could be any projects you’re working on).
Until you receive this packet please look at the suggested plan for the week as well as the links below to support you if you have internet access. Also, you may use Khan Academy or any other math app / game to keep your math brain exercised.

- Do your math homework and have your parent check it
- Read for at least 30 minutes a day
- Look at the FITT plan that is attached and choose some activities you can do as a family. Open the activity log that is attached. Use it to log your physical activity this week.
- Pick a book you are reading or have finished and write a letter to the main character. Tell her/him about what is going on in your life and compare it to the adventures that she/he goes through in the book.
- Complete Day 1 through 4 of Scholastic Learn at Home
- Practice Math Facts at your own level using Fact Monster and Math Playground
- Explore Van Gogh’s bedroom at Google’s Art and culture website. Draw or paint your bedroom. (Maybe you better clean it first!)
- Keep working on your Artist research and paper/projects. (6th graders can email me their rough drafts of your research for your 6th grade projects)

Fun Run Update
We have had so much going on for the past month! First I want to thank everyone who participated in "The Fun Run." The PTO was able to raise a great deal of money for the school that will go directly into your children's classrooms. Because of this great success we will celebrate meeting the challenges by having some special days next week during ANTI BULLYING week. The following days are specified:
Wednesday, February 26th- PINK SHIRT DAY!
Thursday, February 27th-CRAZY HAIR DAY!
Friday, February 28th-FUN DAY AFTERNOON!
Going-Outs
The students have been greatly motivated to plan some "going-outs" this month. We had one group plan some time with the Springsteels; studying investments, stocks, and taxes. Another group went on a hike to the Wind Caves for their research on the Work of Air. The sixth graders will be attending the Renaissance Festival on February 27th in order to interview characters for their research on Medieval/Renaissance Times. I want to thank all of the parents who have volunteered to drive and help support the students on these outings. It is so important for the children to go outside of the class to learn. Hopefully this momentum will continue!

Dear Parents,
We have a lot going on over the next few weeks so take a moment to update your calendars.
Pizza Friday payment is due this Friday for those of you who only paid for one semester in the Fall. The cost is $60. I will send home reminders with your child in their folder tonight if you only submitted half in the fall.
Conferences start next week. These conferences are with your child so please plan on bringing them with you if your conference time falls before or after school hours. Also remember that both Friday 17th and Friday the 24th are half days. I have provided conference sign-ups on the Sign-up page. Please click on the picture to follow the link to Sign-Up Genius.
Villa's Fun Run Pledges will be starting soon. The students will be having their Fun Run Pep Rally on January 22nd.
I want to thank everyone for their help with bringing supplies for Cookies and Gingerbread Houses. I know the cookie exchange and decorating was new but it was so much fun due to all the great decorations and icing provided.
The Pajama Drive was a huge success. The students collected 80 pairs of pajamas and were highly complemented by the foundation for all their hard work! Our class alone brought in 46 pairs of pajamas! Thank you to those parents who are helping to connect your child to understanding the needs of others. Some of our greatest work with children this age is to help them understand their role in their community.
December 10
Dear Parents,
Well the time is just flying by. The mid year and holiday season are upon us and we have so much to do. Over the past few weeks we have been working on our Geometry, Math, and Grammar as usual. Along with that we have been studying a Timeline of Scientists, working in groups on Sun Studies, and researching life systems. Each student has also been completed a long term writing project.
We have also had a group of students who are volunteering for the Monarch Butterfly Watch Team and have been working with Mary Orlando to create a presentation for their peers. Several other students are working together with Scholastic Pajama Drive to collect pajamas for the children in shelters this winter. With each pair of pajamas Scholastic will donate a free book to the children. We are asking all of the families at Villa to participate but in our class we are setting a goal for 100% participation. The pajamas need to be new but in the past people have found them at Goodwill (with the tags still on them), Big Lots, TJ Maxx, or any other department store. They can also be for any age, infant through teens. If we have most of the class participate we will celebrate with a "Wear Your Pajamas to School" on Friday December 20th.
The plans for next week are Thursday morning Gingerbread/Cookie Exchange Decorating and then on Friday a White Elephant "Gag" Gift Exchange. This is just a fun game for students to "re-gift" something from home or possibly purchase a funny gift (under $5). All gifts will need to be wrapped nicely to entice others and kept a secret so as not to ruin the intrigue of the game.
To sign-up for the Gingerbread/Cookie Exchange please go to the Sign-ups page and click on the gingerbread house cookie picture.

Dear Parents,
I want to thank all of you who have been helping your child to finish their moon journals. Their observations have created some amazing discoveries and understanding of the moon cycles. I have received journals with creative images, stories and research. It's been fun and informative.
Next Tuesday we will be having our Fall Family Cultural Potluck. In E1 families come together for research potlucks, so since we don't have that opportunity in E2 this is our come together activity. It is a great time for parents to come and meet other parents and get to know the other children in the class. Please go to the sign-ups page to find the potluck sign-up genius link.
After the potluck the students will be having their yearly "barter day". They are allowed to bring a pillowcase full of anything they have at home that they want to get rid of. The object is for them to trade their items for other people's items. It's a fun way to recycle old toys and collectibles.

Over the next month we have asked the students to keep a "Moon Journal". The idea is that each night they will go outside and look at the moon and then illustrate what phase it is in. They will then be asked to list the date, time and any weather conditions. We had a lesson in class however they may do more research online to "journal" each phase. I have asked them to include information based on what they are interested in such as science, history, mythology, astronomy, etc... They should include notes and illustrations to make their journal fun. There are a great deal of fun ideas online if you would like to help them find a journaling style they like. The number of entries they should have would be 30 from November 1st-November 30th. I know that the phase of the moon can be found on your phone or on a computer but please encourage your children to go outside and actually look at the moon and use those resources only if there is a night they missed.

This week we have Spirit Week. Please remember we will not accept any costumes/masks at school, however we are having Safety Week so we decided to combine it with Spirit Days.
Monday 10/28- Crazy Sock Day
Tuesday 10/29- Twin Day (Dress like a friend or a group of friends)
Wednesday 10/30- Fancy Day (Wear your nice clothes/ ties and dresses)
Thursday 10/31- Character T-shirt/Super Hero T-shirt Day
Friday 11/1- Crazy Hair Day
For Safety week we will be discussing our procedures for Fire Drills and Lock Downs. We will not have actual drills this week but will be discussing the protocol and what responsibilities everyone has during a drill.
Please remind your child they can go to the Documents/Links page to take Accelerated Reader tests after completing each book that they read. To date I only have three students who have logged on to take a test. The purpose of these test are to check for comprehension. It gives us feedback on how much attention the children are giving to their reading selections. I would also like to remind some of you of the Math Home Practice calendar under the same link that you can refer to to see if your child is ontrack with their weekly home practice assignments.

Conference sign-ups are now available. I have a wide variety of times set so please sign-up as soon as possible if you are limited. I ask everyone to please put your sign-up on your calendar as we would like to meet with everyone at their expected sign-up time. Please remember that these conferences are arranged so that the students will be speaking about their goals. One of my greatest expectations for them in going through E2 is to take ownership of their learning. This meeting may be the first for your child to speak about themselves so we will be patient and help guide them to feeling successful. If your child has experienced this before you may want to come with some challenging questions for them to reflect on. See you soon!
Students will need a Campbell's soup can (preferably empty with the label intact) by Monday September 9th. This is for a Norman Rockwell art piece so it does need to be Campbell's soup.
On the last page of Weebly there is a link section. I spoke with the children about taking AR (accelerated reader) test after reading a book. They now have the option to do that at home using the link and their log-in information. They may not use the link to take any other types of assessments. All other test will be administered at school in a controlled environment.
ARt MasterPiece on August 28th. Each Student needs an Apple.

Quick Reminders!
Pizza Friday this Friday- On the Links and SignUps Page you will find the direct links to Signup Genius. We do need a family to sign up to bring the first snack. Also if you have not signed your child up or paid yet please contact us before Wednesday with your plan so we know how much pizza to order.
Helping Hands- We do have some needs for the classroom. We are wanting to start our garden soon and soil and gift cards will help with those projects.
Laundry- We already have families signing up to take the laundry home on Fridays. If we don't fill the days we will draw names of the children who have not yet volunteered for a specific date.
Flowers- Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to bring in fresh flowers. The flowers you chose are up to you. It's fun to take your student to pick out different types. We still have several slots open through the year.
Goal Setting Conferences- Your child's meeting to share their goals with you will be on September 20th and September 27th. We will have the link to sign up ready no later than September 3rd.
Halloween Carnival Volunteers- This year we are assigned the front gate ticket sales. Hopefully we can have enough families to volunteer to sell tickets for an hour. If you have a family member you can split your hour with still sign-up as one slot.
Picture Day is September 5th

WELCOME BACK!
Parents we have had such an amazing start to the year! The students have all come back to school willing and eager to learn. There have been so many proud moments of watching students working together, helping new friends and community building. Everyone has come to school each day with a great desire to do their best.
At the Parent Meeting we were able to get to know one another and discuss classroom needs and expectations. I will be working with Erika Huyck and Jen Huberty to update you with as many new details when available. I have already sent out a Sign-Up Genius Invite for the Flower Schedule. Soon you will see the Laundry Schedule and the Pizza Friday Snack Sign-Ups. We really need every child's help with laundry this year. It is something that needs to be done each week so that we can keep our environment healthy and beautiful. We will ask for everyone to choose two dates throughout the year. If you do not choose your dates then dates will be assigned randomly. In completing the wash the students are learning how to do laundry and being responsible for their environment. It's a great opportunity for them to learn to manage their time, timing items in the wash and then fold them when they are finished drying.
We want to give a big "thank you" to the Jankowski family for our new refrigerator and to the Valandra family for delivering it to the classroom. It will be so convenient for us to have it for items for science and keeping our vegetables from our garden. We will also have a place to store our Friday snacks to keep fresh for lunch.
During the parent meeting we discussed a few items of importance to remember throughout the year:
1. Be sure to have all extended times/vacation time off during the year approved by Margo.
2. If your child comes home with a situation they don't know how to handle sit down with them and have them write me a letter or an email. They can put the letter on my table the next morning or I will read the email and sit with them to find a resolution. We want to help them become independent in having courageous conversations, so making a connection between home and school will support this growth.
3. Pizza Friday begins on August 30th.
4. Goal Setting Conferences will be in September (A Sign-Up Genius Invite will be sent home with dates and times available at the end of August)
5. If you need to meet with me please email me and we will set-up a time. Morning times are my opportunity to prepare the classroom for the days lessons so I'm not available to meet unless we've set an appointment ahead of time.
6. If you are picking your child up early please send me an email if possible so we can be sure they have everything they need before being called to the office. All visitors, or people picking students up, need to check in at the office.
7. If your child is riding home with someone who does not have one of their car line name tags in their car, please send an email or a note with permission so I can write them a "Ticket to Ride". The children will not be allowed to be picked up with out a name tag in the car or a "Ticket to Ride". This is a new policy meant to keep all of our students safe.

END OF THE YEAR!!!
It is bittersweet that this year is coming to a close. I can't say enough what a fantastic year it has been. The students have all grown so much into responsible, hardworking, dedicated students. They achieved many things over the course of the year but most impressive has been the effort they have put into running the classroom. From organizing projects and presentations to leadership of peers has made me extremely proud of them and allowed me to see them as young people who are ready to take on the challenges of this world.

It's Spring Break!
I hope everyone has relaxing plans for their week off.
AZMerit
As a heads-up, I have been asking the students to practice their word processing skills. We have done work here at school practicing typing papers but more work at home will be extremely helpful in supporting your child during AZMerit testing. The students will all be expected to type their writing sample (which is expected to be written in multi-paragraph form) on the writing section of the test. If they have not practiced they will have to spend a great deal of time hunting and pecking keys. We would rather their attention be on the content, structure and mechanics of their writing. We have taken practice writing tests but I do encourage everyone to take the writing sample test online.
In class we have also been going over the math portion of the test. I'm am strongly encouraging them to always show their work on each problem and not to risk guessing the answer on the problems. Many of the problems have multiple steps and at times multiple answers. During our review many of them are missing simple things because they aren't taking time to write things down on scratch paper. Please work with your child on the Arizona Department of Education's website for AZMerit practice. They can even practice test lower than their grade level if they have finished their practice and want to see more examples of questions and how to answer them using the computer program.
At this time we do not have a definite date for AZMerit tests, however the 4th years will be taking AIMS science test on Monday the 25th. Again, this is for 4th grade students only.
Pizza Friday
Unfortunately today at lunch we realized that no one had brought in snack for the class for Pizza Friday. I want to thank all of the parents who have already signed up and a big thanks to the parents who have signed up for more than one day. I would like to ask that any family participating in Pizza Friday who hasn't signed up yet please look at the calendar on our sign-up genius page. It can be found on the pizza page. The Friday after spring break and a Friday in April have not yet been assigned. We used all of our reserve drinks today so we won't have back up when we return. Thank you for helping out.

Introduction of Amory and Jack
Amory: I'm a fifth grader and my interests are art, reading, sewing, and painting.
Jack: I'm a fourth grader. My interests are math, reading, geometry, and grammar.
Starting this week our class is now going to be turning our Weebly updates into our class "Newspaper".
We are going to be doing interviews and showing things such as group studies, special events, and student work. (We have added a student work section to the menu on the left.)
Special Events
Pajama Drive-
Jack: "How do you feel about organizing the Pajama Drive?"
Ellie: "It feels good to help the community and it's fun."
Katherine: "It feels good to give back and (if we meet our goal) we might even have a pajama party."
This year Ellie, Simone and Katherine put together a Pajama Drive for kids in need who need pajamas for the holidays. Their goal was 80-90 pairs and so far they have managed to collect 63. They are extending the date to Monday, December 17th. Please try and participate if you haven't already. If the class has full participation we will celebrate with a pajama party.
Coming Up Events-
White Elephant: On Tuesday we will be having a White Elephant party. Students will need to bring in a gift with a maximum value of $5 (Dollar Tree and Goodwill are great places to shop). The idea is to bring in a "GAG" gift that is re-gifted or super silly. It must be a secret. The gift must be wrapped. The more beautiful then the more enticing it will be. Gifts can be brought in on Monday or Tuesday morning.
Gingerbread Houses: On Wednesday we will be building our Gingerbread Houses. We will be creating a blue-print for our houses on Monday and Tuesday. If you have volunteered to bring in items for our creations, please have them here by Tuesday so we can set-up in advance. www.signupgenius.com/go/4090f4faead29a6f58-gingerbread3
Christmas Party: On Thursday the students may bring in cookies/treats and board games for a morning party. They will have specials on Thursday afternoon so it is our last time to celebrate. The students will come up with a list of the snacks they would like to bring in next Monday.
Group Studies
In history we are studying Pre-American History. The students split up into four groups; "On the Map", "Who's-Who", "Pre-American Vocabulary", and "Pre-Historic America by Numbers (Dates)". The groups then split up the vocabulary on their syllabus. Everyone will research and then bring their information back to the group to put together and present to the class. Each group will need a poster board or power point, a visual aid, and an interactive activity. Each member will be presenting their part to the class.
The fifth and sixth years are working on their individual Ancient Civilization. Each person had to write an essay on their culture. They had to include the climate and biology, intellectual development and spiritual beliefs, relationships within their culture and other tribes, and the practical activities of the culture. After the break they will each present their findings.
The fourth years are completing early human studies and will be reporting next week.
In science the entire class is studying the cell. We had a presentation on the parts of and function of the cell. We then had to research the cells and illustrate our findings. Afterwards, we were able to make a cell cookie or art cells with felt and beads.
